DeNA restructure sees multiple layoffs at both Vancouver and San Francisco offices

With DeNA recently signing a partnership with Nintendo to develop smartphone content based on Nintendo’s IP you wouldn’t expect to hear that the developer is reducing its work force. But that’s exactly what’s happened, with a spokesperson confirming with Venturebeat that a restructure of the Vancouver branch has resulted in lay offs.

The loss of staff is part of DeNA’s restructuring of its North American operations with DeNA saying in their statment; “DeNA Group is continually evaluating its game development operations to ensure that it’s structured in the best possible way to deliver high-quality mobile games to consumers worldwide. As a part of this process, we have decided to reshape the structure of our North American studio operations along with a reduction in workforce. We appreciate their contributions to DeNA and are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with them.”

Additional sources have also claimed that staff have been let go at DeNA’s San Francisco offices. Those lay offs remain unconfirmed at this stage. DeNA’s most recent title Final Fantasy: Record Keeper was released 24 March and has so far already reached 1 million downloads. The developer also recently revealed that it expected to earn more then $25 million per month thanks to the Nintendo partnership.

“The West will continue to be one of our core markets for our mobile gaming business, and this decision has no relation to our alliance with Nintendo or the popularity of Final Fantasy Record Keeper.”
