More Splatoon details revealed, single player mode confirmed

The latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has a feature on Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U take on the multiplayer shooter, Splatoon. Translated in a post at NeoGAF, a lot of questions about how multiplayer will work are answered.

Skill based matchmaking is confirmed, although voice communication wasn’t confirmed and some confusion exists as to whether it will be implemented at all. An in-game gesture system for communication was considered but scrapped due to a lack of usefulness. Smartly only the basic 4v4 game mode will be offered online, to avoid issues with a small player pool making matches hard to find.

There are no “bots” and games can’t start with anything but full teams. Local multiplayer is being worked on, but no details are available on the form that will take. A single player “Hero Mode” was revealed, focusing on the 3D platforming aspect of the game and switching between human and squid forms.

Splatoon will be available for Wii U in May. You can read our preview of the game here.
