You don’t need to worry about losing Wii U data using your amiibo with Super Smash Bros. on 3DS

Now, this has the potential to get confusing fast. Keep up, readers.

Nintendo Enthusiast reports that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U data stored on your amiibo won’t be lost if you use the figurine inside Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo (New) 3DS. They’re using what we assume to be a translation of this Japanese page for the confirmation.

Now, this to us means one of two things:

  • amiibo functionality is different inside Super Smash Bros. on 3DS as compared to Wii U, meaning there isn’t data to exchange; or
  • The amiibo data file can be written to and read from Super Smash Bros. on both 3DS and Wii U without issue, meaning either game will level up each figurine.

Don’t forget that Nintendo has previously confirmed that an amiibo figurine will only be able to store one data file on it at a time, meaning if you’d like to use an amiibo with Mario Party 10, you’ll have to erase its Super Smash Bros. file to write the new game’s data.

We’ve asked Nintendo Australia for clarification.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS today received an update enabling amiibo functionality.

Update: Our second assumption was true, as per Nintendo of America.
