Xbox Live, PlayStation Network alleged hacker arrested in the UK

Krebs on Security reports that police in the UK have arrested a hacker who they believe was responsible for recent Christmas outages on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

The site has posted an image of the police bail document for 22 year-old Vinnie Omari. Krebs on Security believes Omari is a member of Lizard Squad, the hacker organisation that is claiming responsibility for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on Xbox and PlayStation networks.

Moreover, The Daily Dot reports that Omari has said the police, via warrant, raided his home looking for “email addresses, usernames, passwords, documents containing names associated with Paypal fraud,” in connection with the recent DDoS attacks.

The Thames Valley Police confirmed some of this information in a recent press release, but didn’t directly say Christmas DDoS attacks were connected. “The arrest… is in connection with an ongoing investigation in to cyber fraud offences which took place between 2013 and August 2014 during which victims reported funds being stolen from their PayPal accounts,” the Thames Valley Police said.

Over Christmas, DDoS attacks took Xbox Live down for around 24 hours and the PlayStation Network for close to 72 hours.
