The Diversion: German scientists accidentally create Skynet using Super Mario

…ok maybe they haven’t created Skynet (yet), but what the team of researchers at the University of Tubingen, Germany have achieved is pretty phenomenal.

They’ve written code that makes Mario self-aware, feel and express emotions, learn and act accordingly. In the short 5 minute video below it’s demonstrated how Mario can be told that if he jumps on a Goomba it will die and how he remembers and uses the information. It also shows how Mario remembers how to safely navigate levels and will seek out coins if he is feeling “hungry”.

Mario can also be given voice commands thanks to Carnegie Mellon’s speech recognition toolkit and depending on what he’s learned he will act accordingly.

All hail our future robot overlords.
