Sony: We’re embarrassed by Driveclub’s launch

In an interview with IGN Sony UK Managing Director Fergal Gara said that Sony was “embarrassed” by the launch of Driveclub. Originally intended to launch alongside the PlayStation 4, Driveclub was delayed multiple times and then suffered an incredibly difficult launch rife with crippling server issues.

Gara apologised to players for the launch and advised that the long awaited PS Plus version of Driveclub would not launch until Sony and the team at Evolution are satisfied it can do so without further issue.

It’s a disappointment,” Gara said of the launch. “When you lay your soul out as being ‘4ThePlayers’, then what you certainly don’t want is games that are not fully ready. It certainly wasn’t any ill-intention on behalf of the team. It’s ambitious as a game; they’re as embarrassed as we are and all you can do in those situations is say sorry.

“We apologise to any players affected and are doing our damndest to make things right. So that’s what we’ve been doing and the game is pretty near-complete now. We don’t want to introduce the PS Plus Edition until we’re confident the servers can take the load.”

Gara added that while delays are a necessary evil they’re “always frustrating” and it’s never Sony’s “intention to sell a false promise.

Driveclub is available exclusively for PS4.
