The Diversion: Far Cry 4 is unsurprisingly absent from Ubisoft’s Chinese releases

With Sony’s announcement that it will sell the PS4 and Vita in China from 11 January 2015, Ubisoft has also announced that it will be retailing some of its biggest titles in the region.

Among the announced titles for PS4 include Trials Fusion and Rayman Legends. Conspicuously absent — or perhaps to be expected — is Far Cry 4. Set in fictional Kyrat (an analogue for Nepal), Far Cry 4 features a story and setting that closely mirror the events of the Nepalese Civil War.

The war took place from 13 February 1996 to 21 November 2006 and was chiefly a conflict between the government and the Communist Party of Nepal who were trying to overthrow the monarchy and establish a People’s Republic. It ended in 2006 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

More than 17,000 people died in the fighting with the majority of casualties being the Maoists. While China supported the Nepalese Government alongside the United States, India and the EU, its history of censorship especially when it comes to contentious issues surrounding the nation and its government seem to ensure that Far Cry 4 will never see the light of day in China. Not as a native, retail release anyways. We’re happy to be proven wrong if it does get a release, but we’re not confident.

Far Cry 4 is available for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
