Ubisoft wants to teach Watch Dogs some new tricks

Ubisoft are aware that Watch Dogs didn’t set gamers’ and critics’ passions ablaze when it was released in May. In fact, they’re already planning how to rectify the issues with the game and create a better experience.

In an interview with CVG Ubisoft Montreal’s Creative Vice President Lionel Raynaud compared Watch Dogs‘ reception with that of the first Assassin’s Creed. “With the first one we didn’t have such a good reception, and it was fair. We had a lot of flaws in the replayability of gameplay loops and you could feel that the game was a first iteration. At the time, there was clear potential but it was not easy to know it was going to become the franchise that it is today.”

In comparing the two games Raynaud admits “[t]here are flaws” in Watch Dogs and that it was quite difficult “to do everything at the right level, which is why we took more time.” He also revealed the extra time was incredibly beneficial in the development process, “it allowed us to release the game without compromises and do everything that we wanted. We also kept parts of the game we felt didn’t fit with the original for the sequel.”

Finally, Raynaud admits that Watch Dogs had its flaws and that the team are committed to tackling those flaws in “radical” ways that “surprise players.” “This is quite a high ambition and will require us to develop technologies that we didn’t have for Watch Dogs” he added.
