Some New 3DS games won’t work with your current 2DS, 3DS or 3DS XL

As part of their new… um, New 3DS announcement late last week, Nintendo confirmed that some New 3DS games will not work on the current 3DS family of consoles.

That’s right. Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS won’t work on the 3DS you currently own. It’s not because of a lack of buttons, either — it’s the New 3DS’ improved CPU that’s been pegged as the culprit. That means those of you with a 3DS or 3DS XL and a Circle Pad Pro aren’t exempt from the news. You’ll still have to buy a new… New 3DS when it’s made available in your region.

Other titles like Super Smash Bros. will take advantage of the New 3DS buttons, giving those new handheld players advantages over old ones.

The handheld has been confirmed for a 2015 release in North America and Europe, and has yet to be confirmed for Australia.

What do you think of Nintendo doing the unprecedented and forcing their existing 3DS install base to buy a new 3DS if they want to play select new games?
