Digital purchasers of last-gen Destiny can upgrade to current-gen free

Bungie has announced today that anyone purchasing a digital version of Destiny on PS3 or Xbox 360 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the relevant current-gen console for a limited time.

The free upgrade program extends to any and all Destiny content including, the base game, Digital Guardian Edition and the Expansion Pass. By taking up the upgrade, players will still retain their last-gen version meaning they’ll be able to play both their last and current-gen versions simultaneously.

There are some restrictions on the upgrade program which are to be expected. Upgrades can only be applied on the same family of consoles, so a PS3 version can’t be upgraded to an Xbox One version nor Xbox 360 to PS4. Save data is also transferable, but, once again, only between the same console family.

The offer does not extend to any physical copy of the game, so if you pick up a boxed last-gen version you won’t be able to upgrade to current-gen. However, if you purchase the Limited or Ghost Edition on PS3 or Xbox 360 and redeem the Expansion Pass prior to 15 January 2015 you’ll be able to download the expansion pass from within Destiny’s in-game store on your current-gen console within the same family.

For full details of the upgrade program see Bungie’s FAQ.

Destiny launches tomorrow for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
