Activision has not yet announced official sales figures for Destiny, but it has announced that over $500 million worth of the MMOFPS has been shipped to retail worldwide as of 9 September.
CEO of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick said of the launch, “Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny. This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world.”
With over half a billion dollars shipped on day one, Activision are claiming Destiny is the biggest ever launch of a new franchise. Shipped to retail and actually sold to consumers are two very different things, but the $500 million number gives an indication of how Activision and its retail partners anticipate the demand for Destiny.
