A hardware upgrade will be required to continue playing GTA V on some PS3s

Rockstar has posted on its support page linking to instructions on how to upgrade the HDD of 12GB Super Slim PS3 models as Grand Theft Auto V will soon exceed the console’s storage capacity.

In the post Rockstar explains that with title update 1.16, GTAV is now bordering on requiring more space than is available on the Super Slim model. Any and all updates beyond 1.16 will put GTAV over 12GB in size and therefore owners of the Super Slim model will need to upgrade their console’s storage.

Rockstar linked to Sony’s product information page for the Super Slim PS3 which only offers the Officially Licensed 500 GB HDD Kit as a solution, however the Super Slim’s HDD can be upgraded just as easily as other PS3 models.

Rockstar notes that all updates must be installed on the PS3 system to enable GTA Online play, but that if not enough space is available the single player portion of GTAV will still be available offline.

Grand Theft Auto V is now available for PS3 and Xbox 360. A release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One has been confirmed.
