Sony considering an early access program for PlayStation 4

In a conversation with Gamasutra, Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Vice President Adam Boyes revealed that the publisher is interested in bringing an early access program to the PlayStation 4.

“That’s one of the massive conversations we have internally”, said Boyes when asked about early access. “[W]e’re working through that right now. We’re figuring out what’s ok. We obviously have our tech requirement checklist that people have to adhere to. So we’re internally discussing, what does that list look like this? What are the caveats? Stuff like this. So it’s still a project that a lot of minds are considering. No details yet.”

Boyes explains that he believes there are many types of consumer. Some of which who are willing to pay for unfinished products, under certain circumstances. “There are different types of people. There people who always back games, enjoy Kickstarters, try things that they know aren’t finished but are willing to help make better.”

Sony has previously broached the subject of early access with Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida telling Kotaku, “From my standpoint—head of studios—there is interest from developers, that’s all I can say.” Xbox’s Phil Spencer told Kotaku, “I’ve started to think about: ‘Is there a way to more programmatically think about what betas mean on a console? I don’t have a plan that’s locked on that, but just having a bunch of betas happening, I’m not sure if that’s the best way to run a console, either.”
