The Last of Us Remastered Review: Once more with feeling

If you somehow missed The Last of Us on PS3 last year, you’re in for a treat.

We’ve already reviewed the original game and its DLC, “Left Behind” — and this version of the game contains both bits of content plus TLoU‘s multiplayer — so there’s no reason to go through that rigmarole again. What we will do in this review is comment on Naughty Dog’s latest game as it’s been remastered on Sony’s current-gen PS4.

The Last of Us was gorgeous on PS3, and it’s even better looking on PS4. I’m not one to really notice the whole 60 frames per second versus 30 frames per second thing, but it’s very apparent in this title. The smoother flow of cutscenes and gameplay make for a more realistic and — dare I say it — visceral experience. Characters and settings are crisp, clear, beautifully lighted and are true-to-life, just as in the original game. Comparing gameplay to the 30fps experienced on the PS3, I find that it draws me into The Last of Us‘ story even more than it did in the past.

There’s the problem, though — I know the game’s story. I’m aware of what happens in the game’s tragic prologue, and that carries all the way onto its epilogue. Just with your favourite movies, they’re still amazing and enjoyable, but you can’t recapture that experience you have when you walk into an unknown property. If you’ve already played the game, it mightn’t be worth jumping back in so quickly.

That said, if you’re a die-hard fan or simply have nothing else to play on PS4 — which is highly like at this time of year — The Last of Us: Remastered is a great way to pass the time. If you’ve never played The Last of Us, this version of the game comes highly, highly recommended. Highly.
