New firmware update allows Wii U to Wii U system transfers

Nintendo’s latest Wii U firmware patch — version 5.1.0 — now allows users to perform a system transfer between two Wii U consoles.

Like the 3DS system transfer operation, users are able to send system data between two Wii Us. However, also like the 3DS system transfer, the original (or sender) Wii U console will be formatted completely after the transfer is complete. Essentially the system transfer simply allows you to turn a new Wii U into your old one. A list of what is and isn’t transferred can be found here, while instructions on how to perform the transfer are here.

The latest firmware update allows users to browse the eShop with Wii Remotes or the Wii U Pro Controller.

While the ability to do a system transfer is handy for those upgrading from a standard 8GB Wii U to the 32GB version, it’s somewhat pointless for anyone else. We’re still holding out hope that we’ll be able to sign in with out NNID on any Wii U in the near future.
