Destiny doesn’t include cross-platform play to ensure consistency for all players

With the Destiny beta well and truly underway on PlayStation consoles and coming this week to Xbox some players may be wondering why PS3 and PS4 players are unable to play together. Bungie Engineer Roger Wolfson spoke with Digital Trends and explained that rather than being a case of technical limitations, Bungie don’t allow cross-platform play to ensure consistency across all four consoles.

Wolfson explained, “I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I’m four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage.”

He added that in spite of the reality of the hardware, players have a perception that having better hardware means having an advantage. “We don’t want to have to enter that fray, so to create the best, most level playing field, both actually and perceptually, we separated it by platform,” said Wolfson.

How are you finding the beta so far?

Destiny will be available for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One 9 September 2014.
