Sony forecasting fifth annual financial loss in six years

Following yesterday’s news that Sony will make its fourth annual loss in five years, the Japanese tech giant is now forecasting a loss in this current financial year, making five losses in six years.

Sony is expecting a 50 billion yen loss ($490 USD) which is a significant improvement on the 128.4 billion yen ($1.2 billion USD) loss posted for the year ending 31 March 2014. While Sony’s financial fortunes appear to be shifting, the company is still struggling due to the ongoing restructure. The projected losses also relate to 135 billion yen ($1.32 billion USD) in costs with 80 billion yen of that ($783 million) coming from Sony’s exit from the PC market earlier this year.

According to a report from the Oil Profit app, the launch of the PS4 caused Sony an operating loss of 18.8 billion yen ($184 million USD) however it’s projected that the PS4 sales will continue to rise and generate an operating gain of 20 billion yen ($196 million USD) in this financial year. Sony revealed that is had shipped 14.6 million PS3s and PS4s last financial year (down from the 15 million projected), but it expects to ship 17 million at the end of financial year 31 March 2015.
