Neil Druckmann: The Last of Us Remstered is “akin to looking at DVD versus Blu-ray”

Speaking with EDGE, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann opened up about The Last of Us Remastered including what will and won’t be changed in the PS4 port.

“Right now, it’s still a straightforward port,” Druckmann says , “but there are things I’d like to do. I love the feel of the triggers on the PS4, so I want to give the option to switch which triggers you use to shoot and which ones you’re using to listen and crouch.” Druckmann adds that Naughty Dog is looking at adding touchpad functionality, but the main goal of the port is to leave the experience as is without changing what made The Last of Us “so great.”

The main focus for Naughty Dog in developing the port has been the visuals Druckmann admits. “We always build the best possible assets and then we can make the call when things aren’t fitting onscreen or in the frame buffer or in memory, [t]hat way we can pick and choose what we need to emphasize in a moment, and where there’s a compromise on what can [be more detailed] or reduced to a lower quality.”

The PS3 version uses lower quality models during gameplay than in cutscenes and the environment was lowered or raised in visual fidelity depending on where the focus of the scene was being directed. Druckmann explains that by building the highest quality assets possible has made the transition to PS4 possible and that the new console should not have the same limitations as the PS3. “Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60fps, and that involved rendering them all from scratch. It’s interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is ‘Can we fit all this on the disc?’” he said.

The Last of Us Remastered is coming to PS4 later this year.
