Microsoft install base gives Xbox Originals a bigger audience than DirecTV

Nancy Tellem believes that Hollywood doesn’t understand “the richness of storytelling and production values of video games” nor does it “fully understand the expanse of the industry in terms of the number of gamers and the loyalty and conviction the gamers have.”

Speaking with [a]list Daily Tellem said Xbox Originals wouldn’t compromise the Xbox platform’s position as a gaming device first. “We’re very sensitive to make sure whatever we deliver won’t be a distraction and is respectful of subscribers,” she said adding that programming would either be only available on Xbox or best on Xbox.

Mentioning the Xbox 360 and Xbox One sales figures of 85 million units, Tellem drew the comparison between Xbox Originals and traditional cable providers, “Microsoft has 85 million consoles sold globally [and w]ith 48 million subscribers through Xbox Live, Microsoft has a bigger audience than DirecTV.”

Tellem hopes that Xbox Originals can help broaden the Xbox consumer base and explains that “Part of the fun of this job is bringing people in from Hollywood and showing them what Xbox One does. It opens up people’s minds in terms of what the technology is capable of.”

Xbox Originals is set to launch in June.
