Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is the crowdfunded sequel to the 16-bit beat ’em up

No need to check the date. April Fools is still nearly a month away. The return of Shaq to the world of videogames is really happening. Well, it will happen if the project receives enough funding.

Currently live on Indiegogo is a campaign to raise $450,000 to create Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. The description of the project acknowledges that the original game was not of the highest quality, going so far to describe it as an “abomination that was born in the nineties.” The description says the only things in common between the two games are “The name, and the starring character.”

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will feature a beat ’em up style of gameplay described as a mix of Streets of Rage, Street Fighter and Devil May Cry. The finished game will include hundreds of moves, dozens of melee weapons, a co-op mode, destructible environments and a story line featuring the mysterious Black Star Ninja.

If successfully funded, the game will be developed by Big Deez Productions which is made up of ex-members from development teams that worked on Halo, Alan Wake, Spec Ops: The Line, Battlefield, Killzone, Max Payne, Duke Nukem and many more.

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will be available for PC if it reaches $450,000 in funding. At $650,000 a port will be developed for iOS and Android, $775,000 for PS3 and Xbox 360, $960,000 for 3DS and PS Vita, $1.08 million for Wii U and $1.62 million for PS4 and Xbox One.

Will you back Shaq Fu?
