PS4 functionality and limitations at launch revealed

In a pre-release FAQ posted on the PlayStation Blog, Sony has detailed what players can expect from their PS4 come launch day.

The post states “all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience.” Some games will be playable during installation and any updating process and discs will still be required to play games.

There is no DLNA support for PS4 meaning that client support for home PC servers will not be available for the console. There will be no .mp3 playback support and no music visualiser. Sony will instead offer Music and Video Unlimited services.

Users without a PlayStation Plus membership will be able to use the PS4’s stream, share and screenshots functions, but Sony revealed that publishers may restrict the streaming or sharing of certain content within games. When this occurs, recording will be suspended and will resume once the content has passed.

While the PS4 comes with an in-built 500GB HDD, players will need to keep an eye on their storage space as there is no support for external hard drives via USB. Like the PS3 before it, users are able to upgrade the internal hard drive themselves for one with larger storage space.
