F1 2013 will no longer require an online pass for multiplayer

Codemasters will no longer be requiring their “VIP Pass” online multiplayer activation program for F1 2013, MCV reports.

Codemasters originally launched the VIP Pass program in 2011 for Grid 2, Dirt 3 and others. Consumers who bought a new copy of the games would receive a unique code that would unlock the multiplayer content. People who purchased a second hand copy would be required to pay a once off fee.

It’s not clear if Codemasters are abandoning the VIP Pass program entirely, like EA did with their Online Passes in March of this year.

A Codemasters spokesperson told MCV;

We recently reviewed the VIP Pass activation system and took the decision not to include it in either F1 2013 and F1 2013: Classic Edition. Players will not be required to activate multiplayer functionality via a VIP Pass code and we have no plans to replace the pass with an alternative paid-for activation system in the game when it launches this October.

It seems that online passes are destined to be a long forgotten memory of this gaming generation.
