Elizabeth will have her own gameplay identity distinct from Booker in “Burial at Sea”

When players take control of Elizabeth for the very first time in BioShock Infinite’s upcoming DLC — “Burial at Sea” — they’ll discover that she’s more than simply “Booker in a dress.”

Speaking with IGN, level designer Amanda Jeffrey discussed how Irrational were acutely aware of the need to “not betray what the player has already experienced of Liz in Infinite and what they’re going to experience of Liz in the first part of the DLC.”

Jeffries admitted that making Elizabeth different from Booker DeWitt was a priority and that by making her more action-orientated would “be the most awful betrayal of what we’re doing for Liz, and players would just feel like it was a cheap way out, and that’s not something that we want to do.”

Jeffries told IGN that in Infinite, Elizabeth was “a much more thoughtful person,” than Booker and “would be more considerate about keeping out of danger, and assisting you with various different things, and looking for things around in the environment and keeping an eye out for stuff. She’s more aware of her surroundings, and how she interacts with those things.” This, she says, is why Elizabeth will be less action-oriented, focusing instead on stealth and strategy. Sometimes avoiding combat altogether.

Jeffries also confirmed that Elizabteth’s secondary power will be her tears. “We’re still trying to work out exactly how extensive Liz’s tear abilities will be in the playable Liz sequence. I hesitate to say too much about what we have just now, because it’s entirely possible it will change in the next few weeks. I will say, though, that Elizabeth and her tear abilities are not necessarily a ‘win button.’”

“Burial at Sea” has yet to receive a release date but is included in the game’s Season Pass, which should see it released before the end of March 2014.
