Don Mattrick reportedly left Microsoft ahead of massive internal restructure

Yesterday it was announced that Don Mattrick had left Microsoft and joined Zynga as their new CEO. Today –according to a profile of Mattrick on website Fast Company — it appears that Mattrick left just ahead of a ‘massive’ internal restructure at Microsoft which would not have increased the size of his role with the company.

Fast Company are reporting that Mattrick was to be made head of the new Xbox One hardware division which allegedly was instrumental in his decision to leave Microsoft. The report also suggests that Microsoft were not aware of Mattrick’s intentions, hence why no replacement was announced.

Mattrick will be tasked with reversing the fortunes of Zynga which has suffered significantly in recent times. Following reports of his appointment Zynga shares soared by 11 percent.

The profile of Mattrick also delves into his history in the gaming industry, including his time at EA. Mattrick was instrumental in the addition of entertainment features to the Xbox 360 as well as the push for motion control which saw the development of Kinect.

Mattrick replaces Markus Pincus as CEO of Zynga, while Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will oversee Mattrick’s role until an appointment is made.
