Xbox One will not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 software

Too bad for anyone that was hoping to be able to play their vast Xbox 360 collection on the new Xbox One. Mark Whitten, Xbox Live’s VP, told The Verge that as “The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective.”

The bad news is not just limited to Xbox 360 discs though as all Xbox Live Arcade games will not work on the new system either. Anything that was designed for the Xbox 360 would need to be ported and/or re-coded to work on the Xbox One architecture and it appears at this stage that Microsoft have no intentions of doing such a thing.

This doesn’t bode well considering that during the PS4 reveal Sony confirmed that you would be able to stream PS3 games at some point in the future.

What do you think of the lack of backwards compatibility?
