Sony Santa Monica have confirmed that controversial trophy “Bros before Hos” featured in God of War: Ascension will undergo a name change in a patch that will launch alongside the game. The developer spoke with Joystiq on the matter and advised that after the patch the trophy will be named “Bros before Foes”.
The trophy is awarded for brutally pummeling a Fury, which features as one of three female antagonists. The controversy arose after negative reaction from early reviews in which the scene and subsequent trophy were considered misogynistic.
The issue first arose when Adam Sessler – of Revision3 Games – expressed his distaste during his video review.
Sessler says during the review “This gut punch of misogyny irredeemably sours this game and is shocking that such a talented developer would traffic in such a contemptible attitude. I have always liked the adult fantasy of the God of War games – that Grand Guignol silliness – and in this moment, it’s all reduced to some frat house joke, making me ashamed that I ever thought it was more than that in the first place.”
Sony Santa Monica’s statement reads;
“We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game. We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”
Players will be prompted to download the patch upon booting up the game for the first time from launch day onwards.
God of War: Ascension will be available exclusively for PS3 on 14 March.
