PS4 could feature different subscription levels; every game to be available digitally

In an interview with The Guardian, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yohida revealed that the PlayStation 4 could offer a multi-level subscription service, not unlike pay television, Spotify and the like. Consumers could pay for different subscriptions which would grant them access to various content packages.

“We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that,” says Yoshida. ” We can do subscription services when we have more content – especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games – that’s our dream”.

According to Yoshida the PS4 will embrace the digital market even more closely than its predecessors. Each and every game released for the system will also be available digitally whether or not they are available at retail. This creates greater scope to accommodate smaller indie titles (much like PS3 does now) as well as support a wide range of payment options, including free-to-play and subscriptions.

Yoshida says that the aim of the PS4 is to “be similar to PS Vita in that every game will be available as a digital download, and some will also be available as a disc.”

A tiered subscription model could actually work well if the cost was right. What do you think?
