Have the PlayStation 4’s specs been revealed?

Remember how last week Sony posted a mysterious video online inviting you to “See the Future” on 20 February?Well the guys over at EDGE are not only confident that the announcement will be none other than the PlayStation 4, they are claiming to have specification details for Sony’s new console direct from reliable sources.

Development sources currently working with the new system have reportedly commented that the PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the New Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and will be available in the US and Japan by the end of the year.

According to EDGE the new controller will be the same size as an existing DualShock but will feature a touch screen in place of the START, SELECT and PS buttons and will be based on the tech used for the rear touch pad on the PS Vita. The controller will also feature a “Share” button which allows the distribution of screenshots and recorded video online. The PS4 will allegedly record the most recent 15 minutes of gameplay continuously and allow for it to be edited and uploaded by the user.

Sources have suggested that the console will launch in the US and Japan by the end of 2013 and will be available in Europe early 2014. A new PlayStation Eye will be available at launch which can be used in conjunction with the existing Move peripheral.

In order to make the PS4 more developer friendly, Sony have reportedly worked hard to make the architecture of the new console far more PC like than its predecessors. Developer sources have claimed that recently leaked hardware specs are accurate and that the PS4 features;

  • 4GB GDDR5 RAM, capable of moving data at 176 GB p/sec;
  • Eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz; and
  • AMD’s ‘R10XX’ and onboard ‘Liverpool’ chip;

Sources have also reportedly confirmed that while the New Xbox features  8GB of DDR3 RAM the PS4’s RAM will match the 8GB and will be slightly more powerful than Microsoft’s new console.

How do those specs grab you? Do you think they are legit? I guess we’ll all find out 20 February.
