As if anyone, anywhere needed more proof that Minecraft is an unstoppable juggernaut, comes the news that Minecraft is now more popular than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox Live. Major Nelson announced that for the week of 15 October, Minecraft was the most popular and most played game on Xbox Live, surpassing Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 13, Black Ops, Halo: Reach and Battlefield 3.
In case you hadn’t noticed, all of the games in that list are full priced, retail games, whereas Minecraft is an Arcade title. Only one other Arcade title, Happy Wars, Xbox Live’s first freemium game, is even in the top twenty played games for the week.
This is a pretty staggering statistic considering the immense popularity of Activision’s first-person-shooter franchise. I believe congratulations are in order.
