On the back of ArenaNet’s recent success with the launch of Guild Wars 2, the Washington-based developers have announced and immediately released a beta client for Mac OSX users for the exceedingly popular massively multiplayer game. Rejoice, Mac users — you’re real gamers too!
This move does comes as a surprise, with previous statements suggesting that Guild Wars 2 would be solely supported on Windows. With the increasing prevalence of gamers using Apple products for their personal computers, it is a welcome change to see such immediate support for the platform, without the need for workarounds to run the game natively in OSX or use Bootcamp.
Video game tracking site, Raptr, listed Guild Wars 2 as the top played game last week, beating out long-standing champion League of Legends.
It is no surprise then that ArenaNet have reported sales in excess of 2 million units in their first fortnight, even after halting digital sales 2 days after release. For comparison, BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic has sold about 2.5 million units since December 2011 while The Secret World developers, Funcom, have reported total sales of just over 200,000 at the end of August this year.
