Sony buys cloud-based gaming service Gaikai

Well, this is sure going to get the PlayStation 4 rumour mill working at a heightened efficiency.

Sony announced last night that they have purchased Gaikai, an online cloud gaming service like OnLive, for $380 million.

“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internetconnected devices.”

Sony said in a statement that they plan to “establish a cloud service and expand its network business by taking full advantage of Gaikai’s revolutionary technology and infrastructure including data centers servicing dozens of countries and key partners around the world.”

Will this cloud-based gaming structure be the guts behind the PlayStation 4? Since I can’t get broadbased internet at my new apartment right now, I’m sure hoping not. If this service is used for backwards compatability of old titles or something secondary, I’m all for it. What do you guys think?
