Nintendo announces larger 3DS XL model [UPDATE: price and release date]

At today’s “Nintendo Direct” online presentation, Nintendo just announced a 3DS XL model.

The new, larger 3DS will come with a 4.88″ top screen and a 4.18″ bottom screen. Battery life has also been improved; even with larger screens, the 3DS LL will last for 6-10 hours, more than double that of the original 3Ds. The form of the unit remains the same, meaning there isn’t a second analogue stick on the device.

Here’s some of what Nintendo Australia had to say about the new model:

Nintendo 3DS XL features an updated form factor and will be available in Silver + Black, Red + Black, and Blue + Black. The new system’s battery life outperforms that of the original Nintendo 3DS, and it comes bundled with a 4GB SD card, which owners can use to store content such as downloadable games and videos from the Nintendo eShop.  With upcoming titles such as New Super Mario Bros. 2 (launching 8th August) being available as digital downloads as well as boxed retail games, you will be glad of the extra space.

The 3DS XL will be available in Australia from 23 August for $249.95.

I know Nintendo has a habit of doing this now, but it just seems ridiculous.

I'm actually looking forward to this :) At first I wasn't but after seeing videos of it in action, I'm impressed! Can't wait to see the large screen!
