Sony warns of PSN security attack, locks affected accounts

Philip Reitenger, VP and Chief Security Officer of Sony Group, took to the Sony PlayStation blog today to alert customers of another potential security attack on the PlayStation Network (PSN).

Reitenger explained that a number of Sony networks, including PSN, were hit with large numbers login attempts using username and password combinations likely sourced “from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources.” Most combinations were unsuccessful, but those accounts that were able to be logged in to have been temporarily suspended as a security measure.

Says Reitenger, “Less than one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of our PSN, SEN and SOE audience may have been affected. There were approximately 93,000 accounts globally (PSN/SEN: approximately 60,000 accounts; SOE: approximately 33,000) where the attempts succeeded in verifying those accounts’ valid sign-in IDs and passwords, and we have temporarily locked these accounts.”

If you’re one of the lucky few affected, never fear. “If you are among the small group of affected SOE customers, you will receive an email from us at the address associated with your account that will advise you on next steps in order to validate your account credentials and have your account turned back on,” Reitenger explained.

It goes without saying that you should go and check your email now. And, affected or not, it might not be a bad time to change your passwords on social networks, gaming services and the like, folks.
